WSS: Sofuoglu increases lead with commanding win
31 May 2010
Kenan Sofuoglu has eked out his World Supersport Championship lead again after breaking Eugene Laverty's winning streak with a commanding performance at Miller Motorsports Park.
A repeat of his win from twelve months ago when he snatched victory on the final lap, Sofuoglu had it slightly easier this time as he brushed off the attentions of Laverty to cruise home to a comfortable victory.
Sofuoglu made things somewhat difficult for himself initially when he was beaten through the first turn by both Laverty and Chaz Davies, but after dispatching of the Triumph rider by the end of lap one, the Turk quickly latched onto his arch rival.
Immediately breaking the lap record, Sofuoglu swiftly caught up with Laverty and while an entertaining tête-à-tête would ensue for a couple of laps, the Ten Kate man would eventually break through to pull a small gap on Laverty.
It was an advantage he'd maintain to the chequered flag, the top three of Sofuoglu, Laverty and Joan Lascorz remaining fairly static for remainder of the race as the title contenders locked out the podium positions once again.
In the overall standings, Sofuoglu now leads Laverty by six points, while Lascorz is a further eight points further back.
A fairly uneventful race for the most part, it was Davies who provided much of the attention as he fended off Michele Pirro, Katsuaki Fujiwara, David Salom, Robbin Harms and Gino Rea.
Despite a few tricky moments as his Triumph bucked over the ripples in the tarmac, Davies held on for another impressive result that consolidates his fourth position in the overall standings.
Pirro and Fujiwara followed in fifth and sixth, while Salom settled for seventh having worked his way back from a poor start.
Harms, Rea and Fabien Foret rounded out the top ten as all but one rider would finish the race, with local wild-card Melissa Paris proving the only person to feature on the retirements' list.
