Provisional Nurburgring pole for Lowes

2 September 2011

Sam Lowes has taken a provisional World Supersport pole position for the second time this season after conquering his rivals on day one around the Nurburgring.

Having been the dominant force during the wet first free practice session, the Parkalgar Honda carried his form through to provisional qualifying as he leapt to the top of the timesheets in the final minutes with the only lap of the day to break 2mins.

Placing him a comfortable six tenths faster than second place Chaz Davies, Lowes will be hoping to repeat the outcome of his first provisional pole position at Misano, which subsequently became his maiden WSS pole position outright.

Behind Davies, who bounced back from technical issues in the morning to keep the pressure on his increasingly distant title rivals in second, was David Salom, the Spaniard leading the way into the closing stages, only to scupper his hopes of improving with a crash late on.

Robbin Harms rounded out the provisional front row, ahead of WSS rookie Florian Marino, Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret, while Gino Rea – who was disqualified from a then best finish of second at the Nurburgring twelve months ago – was eighth best.

James Ellison made it all four British riders inside the top ten in ninth, ahead of the Lorenzini Kawasaki of Massimo Roccoli. Two-time race winner Luca Scassa, who has struggled for form in recent races, was only 11th best.
