WSS » Lowes resists Kawasakis for provisional pole

Bogdanka PTR Honda's Sam Lowes equals the Monza World Supersport lap record to resist the attentions of four Kawasaki riders during first qualifying.
Lowes resists Kawasakis for provisional pole
Sam Lowes has assumed provisional pole position for the fourth round of the 2012 World Supersport Championship at Monza after storming ahead of Kenan Sofuoglu on his final flying lap.

Sofugolu looked to have done enough to take the overnight top spot as he put a healthy three tenths between himself and DeltaFin Kawasaki team-mate Sheridan Morais with his closing effort, only for Lowes to swoop in more than four tenths faster himself.

Furthermore, the effort was also good enough for him to exactly match the lap record set by PTR predecessor Eugene Laverty two years ago, putting him in a good position to maintain his place out front through Q2.

Lowes's performance denied what looked to be a dominant session for Kawasaki, though the ZX-6R remains threateningly poised in second, third, fourth and fifth in the order of Sofuoglu, Morais, Fabien Foret (Intermoto Step) and wild-card Stefano Cruciani (Puccetti).

Roberto Tamburini continued to make gains on the Lorini Honda with the sixth best time, ahead of Ten Kate Racing's Broc Parkes, while Mathew Scholtz was an impressive eighth as he out-paced experienced racer Massimo Roccoli, as well as his PTR team-mate Jules Cluzel.

Despite going fourth fastest, Foret was one of three riders to take a tumble during the session, along with Raffaele de Rosa and Balazs Nemeth.

There are some greay riders in this championship yet there doesn't deem to be many people bothering to pay much attention. Cal Crutchlow was here only a few seasons ago. Sam Lowes is on his way to the top no doubt in my mind about that.
