Jules Cluzel has taken provisional pole position for the ninth round of the 2012 World Supersport Championship at Silverstone
after coming out top in a rain-affected Q1 session.
With wet conditions ensuring lap times were some 25 seconds down on what the riders had managed in the dry FP1 session, Cluzel eventually struck to the front of the field with one of his final efforts, the Frenchman a clear seven tenths quicker than PTR counterpart Sam Lowes.
In turn, the home favourite was well ahead of Kenan Sofuoglu, the championship leader 1.3secs adrift of his key title rival, while a late improvement from Alex Baldolini jumped him to a provisional front row start aboard the Suriano Triumph.
With rain also forecast for Saturday's Q2 session, the Q1 times may be good enough to form the full grid, which would leave Mathew Scholtz in a career best fifth, the Bogdanka PTR Honda rider enjoying his most competitive outing of the season thus far.
Broc Parkes was sixth fastest, ahead of Vladimir Leonov as the best of the meagre Yamaha contingent, while Josh Day, Imre Toth and Sheridan Morais rounded out the top ten.
Further back, Dan Linfoot was an encouraging 13th best on the MSD RN India Kawasaki, while fellow WSS debutant Kenny Noyes cracked the top twenty in 19th aboard the only Suzuki GSX-R600 in the field.
Crucially, particularly if conditions worsen for Q2, title contender and Brno race winner Fabien Foret was only 25th best on the Intermoto Step Kawasaki.
