Lowes on record pace at Phillip Island

20 February 2013

Sam Lowes has fired a warning shot to his World Supersport rivals by producing record-breaking pace during pre-season testing at Phillip Island for new employers Yakhnich Yamaha.

Lowes switches to the Russian-backed team after two seasons with PTR Honda, a relationship that is already yielding positive results after the British rider dominated pre-season testing in Australia, topping three of the four timed sessions.

Fending off reigning champion Kenan Sofuoglu as one of only a handful of riders to crack 1min 34secs, Lowes's impressive timesheet topping lap of 1min 33.074secs was eight tenths faster than Joan Lascorz's existing lap record.

However, while Lowes was pleased with his scorching pace over a single lap, he says the challenge is now to ensure he can temper it with race longevity.

“Every time I went onto track I was faster,” he said. “I think we still don't know the real limit of the bike. We'll unlock it during the race. We have a big potential to show certain fast laps so now we are looking for better settings to save tyres until the end.”
