WSS Aragon 2013: Foret on top with Aragon victory
17 April 2013
Fabien Foret has taken the lead of the World Supersport Championship standings after claiming a slightly fortuitous – but no less deserved - victory in the second round at Motorland Aragon.
Foret was the big beneficiary when long-time leader Sam Lowes slowed ahead of him on the final lap with technical problems, though the close-following Mahi Kawasaki rider insists he was primed to have a go at grabbing the lead at the final time of asking anyway.
Regardless, Foret had put in a fine performance to make the podium anyway after a mistake at the opening corner dropped him as low as 12th in the early stages before forging a determined fight-back to take the lead back in just eight laps.
Though Lowes, who was also recovering from his own error, would re-take the position in the second-half of the race, Foret was confident he would have prevailed over the young Englishman anyway.
“I had a plan for the last lap and let Sam Lowes do the work, and was going to try to get back to him. You never know how these things will go but I was ready anyway. We started the weekend with a set-up that was not perfect but my crew chief and my team did a lot of work to give me a good set-up and give me confidence for the race, so compliments to them.
“We got onto the podium, in first position, so we have to be pretty happy about that. Consistency in this championship is the key but you have to win when you can because full points are important too. It is a long season and this on should be exciting but I will try my best as I always do.”
After finishing fourth in the first race, Foret now stands at the top of the standings, ahead of Michael van der Mark and Luca Scassa.
