Christian Iddon and MV Agusta have kicked off the third round of the 2013 World Supersport Championship with the fastest time in first free practice around a decidedly damp Assen TT circuit.

Wet and cold conditions from the outset would serve to keep lap times well adrift of the records, even if there were marked improvements as the session reached its climax.

Indeed, though little prediction for the weekend ahead can be taken from the session, Iddon – a winner at Assen in British Supersport last season - was at least close to the top throughout 45mins, regularly returning to the head of the timesheets as the conditions improved.

It would culminate in his final lap lifting him to the front again as the chequered flag was deployed, a result that marks a small, yet significant landmark for both the Briton and the ParkinGO MV Agusta team.

Go Eleven Kawasaki man Andrea Antonelli was the rider Iddon would dislodge from the top of the leaderboard, while Sam Lowes would make it two Britons in the top three in third place.

Luca Marconi was fourth quickest on the PTR Honda, ahead of Pata by Martini Yamaha's Massimo Roccoli, Kev Coghlan on the DMC Lorenzini and Gabor Talmacsi riding the Prorace Honda, winners at Assen last season with stand-in rider Lorenzo Lanzi.

Elsewhere, series leader Fabien Foret opted not to set a time in the session, as he often does during wet conditions, while Kenan Sofuoglu also kept his mileage to a relative minimum.
