Scottish rider Kev Coghlan mastered the wet conditions on his Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini ZX-6R to seize provisional pole at Monza.

Coghlan set a fastest time in the pouring rain at the Italian track of 1m 59.339s to head Andrea Antonelli on the Goeleven Kawasaki by 0.296s.

Defending world champion Kenan Sofuoglu was third quickest on the Mahi Racing Team India ZX-6R as Kawasaki filled the top three positions, with Sheridan Morais fourth on the PTR Honda.

Morais' best time of 2m 00.97s was 1.638s down on Coghlan, although the trio of leading Kawasaki riders were only separated by 0.389s as they held a clear advantage over the rest of the field.

Pata Honda's Lorenzo Zanetti and Luca Maroni (PTR Honda) completed the top six, with Ireland's Jack Kennedy seventh on the Rivamoto Honda.

Yakhnich Yamaha's Sam Lowes ended the day in 13th position on his YZF-R6 after crashing on his third lap while holding the fastest time.

Lowes - fastest in FP1 - didn't rejoin the session and gradually dropped down the times as a result.

Christian Iddon was 12th fastest on the ParkinGO MV Agusta F3 675.
