Reigning champion Sylvain Barrier is well placed to extend his lead in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup after dominating second qualifying at Monza.

The Frenchman was in excellent form from the start to put in a lap of 1min 46.399secs straight away, a marker that alone would have been good enough to secure him pole position. Nonetheless, Barrier would go faster still before the session was completed, lapping in 1min 45.870secs to break Davide Giugliano's record in the process.

It was also enough to put him seven tenths clear of Michele Magnoni on the sister GM Racing BMW, the Italian showing impressively on his wild-card outing to secure a spot on the front row.

His performance means he could be a factor in the title battle, with Barrier's closest rivals Eddi La Marra and Niccolo Canepa just behind their countryman in third and fourth places.

Romain Lanusse rounds out the top five, the youngster out-qualifying his MRS Kawasaki team-mate Jeremy Guarnoni in sixth, while Greg Gildenhuys had a late crash to rue for him failing to make it higher than seventh on the grid.

Matthieu Lussiana and Lorenzo Savadori complete the third row in eighth and ninth, with Alessandro Andreozzi rounding out the top ten.
