Sam Lowes continued to underline his superiority around Donington Park by repeatedly smashing his own lap record during final qualifying for a fourth pole position of the season.

The Yakhnich Yamaha rider, who scored is maiden World Supersport win on home soil last season, came into Q2 having broken the lap record in FP2 with a time of 1min 30.903secs, but wasted no time in bettering that again at the start of the critical qualifying session.

It was a benchmark he would then repeatedly improve as he increased the distance to his rivals, Lowes breaking the record on five occasions to end the session with an outstanding 1min 30.276secs.

To his credit, nearest rival Kenan Sofuoglu would also go well below the previous lap record, though the Mahi Kawasaki rider was still half a second adrift of the championship leader.

Even so, the title rivals will likely face stern competition from wild-card Glen Richards, the reigning British Supersport champion going an excellent third on the Smiths Triumph, even if his session was ended dramatically when he slid off at Mcleans and was collected by the close-following Alex Schacht, seemingly without serious harm.

Heading up row two, Monza standout Florian Marino continued his excellent form to go fourth aboard the Intermoto Kawasaki, ahead of fellow podium winner Lorenzo Zanetti, while Richards' former BSS title rival Jack Kennedy will get underway sixth.

A strong session for the local contingent, Christian Iddon will start his home round in seventh place aboard the ever-improving ParkinGO MV Agusta, the Briton heading off Sheridan Morais, Vladimir Ivanov and Fabien Foret.

Elsewhere, Kev Coghlan will start in 12th position, while title contender Michael van der Mark – returning to action this weekend after suffering injuries at Monza – is just 20th.
