SSTK: Barrier extends lead with Assen win
22 April 2012
Sylvain Barrier has increased his advantage at the top of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship after winning another shortened race at Assen.
The Frenchman came into the second SSTK event of the season with an early advantage after prevailing in a five lap sprint at Imola and looked poised to extend his lead after dominating qualifying.
However, Barrier would have to work hard for his Assen success after a laboured getaway left him fourth during the early stages behind the fast-starting Eddi La Marra, Bryan Staring and Markus Reiterberger.
Quickly dispatching of Reiterberger, Barrier progressed to second position when Staring barrelled out of the spot on lap two, the Australian punished after touching one of the damp white lines fringing the otherwise dry Assen circuit.
Though simultaneous errors at the start of lap four allowed third place man Lorenzo Savadori to pass both Barrier and La Marra into the lead, the BMW Italia rider quickly collected himself to nose his S1000RR out front for the first time on lap five of 13.
It was a position he would maintain until lap eight when the race was red flagged and declared due to oil spilled by Federico Sandi expiring Althea Ducati 1199 Panigale further back in the field.
As such, Barrier was confirmed as the race winner, with Barni Ducati team-mates Savadori and La Marra completing the podium positions.
Just missing out on the rostrum, Loris Baz was classified fourth, the MRS Kawasaki rider losing time after getting embroiled in the chasing pack, while Reiterberger and Barrier's team-mate Lorenzo Baroni followed him home in fifth and sixth.
Elsewhere, Jeremy Guarnoni, Christoffer Bergman, Marco Bussolotti and Matthieu Lussiana completed the top ten positions.
