Lowes completes long-awaited first win
13 May 2012
Sam Lowes has taken his long awaited first World Supersport Championship victory in ideal surroundings with a commanding performance on home soil at Donington Park.
The Bogdanka PTR Honda has enjoyed many stints in the lead of WSS races since making his full-time WSS debut in 2011, but has been unable to turn it into a debut win. However, having shown impressive speed throughout the free practice and qualifying he was able to translate that into similarly strong race pace.
Even so, he was still forced to recover from a poor start that left him fourth initially, though Lowes would work his way back to the front by lap eight, assuming a lead he wouldn't cede to the chequered flag.
A convincing performance by Lowes, not least setting the fastest lap on the penultimate revolution as Kenan Sofuoglu began to apply the pressure, his win puts him within five points of the overall series lead.
Sofuoglu continues to sit at the other end of that margin, the DeltaFin Kawasaki rider maintaining his consistent run of results with a stealthy advance to second position.
Jules Cluzel led initially from pole position but would be forced to settle for third place, while Broc Parkes edged out his fellow Australian Glen Richards for fourth, the latter nonetheless claiming a strong result on his wild-card outing.
Sheridan Morais wound up a distant sixth on the second of the factory-supported Kawasaki's, ahead of countryman Ronan Quarmby, the PTR Honda rider overtaking Valentin Debise on the final lap to claim seventh. Richards's Smiths Gloucester Triumph team-mate Billy McConnell notched up an impressive finish in ninth, ahead of Fabien Foret, the Frenchman losing ground in the title fight with an anonymous tenth place result.
Completing the points' paying positions, Roberto Tamburini was 11th, Alex Baldolini in 12th – the Italian now the only rider in the field to have finished all five races inside the points – Jed Metcher in 13th, Massimo Roccoli in 14th and Luke Mossey in 15th.
