Sebastien Loeb says it was a difficult decision to stand down from a full-time WRC drive

Seb is without the best the WRC has ever seen. People can go on about the competition (or lack of it in some eyes) but he competed and won against the very best, Colin, Carlos, Tommi, Richard, Petter & Marcus. Mr Gronholm was the only one that gave him a bit of a squeeze and that was when Ford were throwing everything they could at the sport to win it yet they failed. The man is a machine and his drive and love for the sport has not deminished one bit. This should really be his 10th title as he should have won it in 2003 but sacrificed his own glory at rally GB for the team. He is a motorport legend and a nice guy to boot, met him a couple of time and like Carlos, would give you time to chat. Hope he wins this weekend and goes on to other things.

He might be the best there ever was. Hell, he is. But there's one thing that titles and wins can't give him: Vatanen's or McRae's charisma. Toivonen's, Ragnotti's or even Solberg's passion. He has the stamina, the commitment, the artistry, the precision and every other ability you can throw at him. But he lacks something on the showmanship department. Maybe if he drove a group B back in the day...

Who cares about eye candy, charisma, back flips or if you get your panties in a happy twist. What Loeb has done will never be duplicated or surpassed in the future. How lucky we are to have witnessed the greatest rally driver to have lived (or will ever live). I wish Loeb to get to the Dakar next, and back to Le Mans, etc. etc. :-)

Rallying is not about attracting spectators, it is about winning.

If you have an eye pleasing style, brilliant! If you don't, you don't.

It is the same for F1 - you can go sliding the car about like Gilles Villeneuve and Lewis Hamilton, or you can drive smooth and precise like Prost and Alonso.

Technology killed off the fancy stuff because the cars grip better, turn better, accelerate smoothly, brake in shorter distances.

Going sideways is slower half the time in modern rallying, we aren't in group B any more where the power output meant you fishtailed out of every turn, and the brakes don't randomly chuck the back end out.

In every sport the result is more important than entertaining the spectators so Loeb's career is without doubts the best in rally history. After 9 titles to be said something like 'he hasn't got proper opposition' is simply ridiculous.
