I just want to ask him, "why are you so good?" I can't think of anybody else in the field of auto racing who's quite so good, so, just perfect. And why can't I still get as excited about him as I was about Colin McRae?

@Roadrage
apart from Blomqvist, all the other names you mention are the one beaten by Loeb.
And he was a rookie ( try to find a rookie beating your so called non competitors like Hirvonen( 14 wins) Solberg,JML or Sordo are
It is quite interesting to see some people believing that suddenly during a period of 8 or 9 years skilled drivers disappeared from the face of the earth.
Statistically speaking any scholars would explain that there are more chances of having one single outstanding driver than having the extinction of the very good driver specie.
a simple exercise : remove Loeb from the equation and you'll have competition and several extra world champions in the last 9 years. And they would come from different teams so even the best machinery theory would not even be the winning factor.

Best ever? I don't think so. He's ALWAYS had the best equipment and since Gronholm retired, no real competition. Sure he's talented and deserves credit as one of the best, but without a Sainz or Makinen or McRae or Gronholm, not to mention Blomqvist or Auriol(in their prime) and other past greats to compete against, he hardly deserves "best ever" status.
A record number of wins means little when you're driving the best machinery against little competion. Just look at the Schumacher /Ferrari years or Doohan in Gp/?MotoGp. They deserve credit as great competitors but profited from competing against lackluster competition.

perfect departure with a last win and a championship
but now, any victory and even the championship next year will be devaluated
now, they will win just because Loeb doesn't race anymore, except for fun

Maybe like Carlos Sainz, he'll do Dakar Rally some year and win, to show he really is the 'Greatest'. Without a Dakar win under his (Loeb) belt he wont be that.

The best rally driver ever has landed his 76th victory. Absolutely perfect job by Loeb even though he made some wrong tyre choices today. Congratulations to Ostberg who managed to beat Fords factory driver Solberg in the championship.
