Matthew Wilson is one of the rising stars in the World Rally Championship and is again competing for the Stobart Ford team. Thus far this season he has notched up 12 points following top eight finishes in Mexico, Jordan, Greece and Turkey. Crash.net Radio's Russell Atkins spoke to the youngster, who is the son of Ford/M-Sport boss, Malcolm Wilson, recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed...

Crash.net:
Matthew, what are your feelings about the year so far?

Matthew Wilson:
Really good - we have been making progress and the last few rounds before the summer break were really positive. Greece and Turkey both went well [and I finished sixth and seventh respectively]. If we can keep making that sort of progress I will be happy. There are some good rounds in the second half of the year and I am looking forward to them.

Crash.net:
What would you pick out as your highlights so far in 2008?

MW:
I think Sweden was probably a great rally for us and also Turkey. To finish the first day there within a minute of the guys at the front of the field was a good achievement after 170 kilometres of driving. Sweden in contrast was a real high and a real low. We had real good pace and we were battling for fifth position. But then we retired towards the end [Matt was forced out in the penultimate stage due to a mechanical problem - Ed]. But overall I think there have been more highs than lows so far this year.

Crash.net:
What targets have you got for the second half of the season?

MW:
Just to keep progressing the way we are really. As I said there are some good rallies coming up for us. Like New Zealand, Japan and Rally GB – all those sorts of events. The tarmac rallies are going to be difficult. But if we can keep progressing the way we have been I will be happy.

Crash.net:
Finland is next - what are your expectations for that one?

MW:
I am looking forward to it. It seems like it is a while since we have done a rally. But it is always a hell of an experience to do Finland. It never fails to get the nerves going as well. It will be good I am sure.

Crash.net:
You mentioned the asphalt events a moment ago. There are three of them in the second half of the season. How are you looking forward to those and how tough will it be to go back to tarmac, because the last time the WRC was on the black stuff was back in January for the Monte?

MW:
It is going to be tough. It will be interesting to see what the grip is like with the new control tyres. Hopefully after the first one in Germany we will get a bit more of a feeling and then Spain and Corsica will be a bit easier.

Crash.net:
You did a charity bike ride recently. Tell us about that…

MW:
It was the whole length of the UK. It was about 900 miles in total. It took us eight and a half days. It was a brilliant experience and I would do it again tomorrow. We averaged just over 100 miles a day. I think the shortest day was 98 miles and the longest 114 miles. All-in-all we had a good time and it was good fun.
