Rallye Monte Carlo: Yuriy Protasov and Pavlo Cherepin - Q&A

Yuriy Protasov: I am very happy to get to the end of what is a very difficult event.
Yuriy Protasov and Pavlo Cherepin reflect after taking the WRC2 victory on Rallye Monte Carlo in their Ford Fiesta R5...

Q:
Yuriy, your first WRC 2 win under difficult conditions. How are you feeling?

Yuriy Protasov:
I remember it was very difficult but I am very happy to get to the end of what is a very difficult event.

Q:
You have a new co-driver with Pavlo, how is that relationship working?

Yuriy Protasov:
Good and it is improving all of the time – maybe he says more now.

Q:
Have you been happy with your pace this weekend? How was the R5?

Pavlo Cherepin:
It's a great car and it was the perfect preparation with M-Sport. It was a great rally and we are really happy.

Q:
You lost your lead when you picked up a puncture Friday morning, did you think the win was lost then?

Pavlo Cherepin:
We were just confident because after shakedown we had training with Evgeny Novikov in changing tyres. We did it five times and we were confident we could make it fast. He was just checking the time and that helped.

Q:
The conditions were so tough on this rally, tell us about that last loop…

Pavlo Cherepin:
We should say thanks to Evgeny Novikov and Kuldar Sikk who were our safety crew on this rally. We had absolute confidence in them and in the notes they made. We had ice, snow, water and everything, but all of the time we were very confident. The notes were slow when they needed to be slow. We had a good gap back to second place, so it was okay.

Q:
It was a tough one for the co-driver?

Pavlo Cherepin:
Yes it was, the tempo of the roads and the stages is changing all of the time. We are going from the fast section to the slow and then, fast and fast again and we have a lot to say all of the time.

Q:
From a co-driving perspective how tough were these stages?

Pavlo Cherepin:
The Sisteron stage was the toughest stage in my career. When I saw the finish I was very happy. The changing of tempo from slow to fast and then again to slow and fast and I was having to speak faster and faster with a lot of description for the corners. It was very fast speaking.

Q:
What is the aim for the season for you?

Pavlo Cherepin:
I think that we are coming for the next rally to win. This will be our task for every next rally. Then at the end of the season we will see.

Q:
Sweden is next, how will you prepare?

Pavlo Cherepin:
We are having a test in Estonia prior to Sweden. Maybe next week and from today I start co-driving preparation, just management and so on.

Q:
Yuriy, it's Rally Sweden next - how confident are you?

Yuriy Protasov:
I very much like snow, there is much snow in my country and I am training all of the time in snow in my country.

Q:
What was the feeling when you crossed the line?

Pavlo Cherepin:
It was just happiness, it was the first time for us, so we said congratulations to each other and just… cheers!
