BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team's Jari-Matti Latvala has retired from the Neste Oil Rally Finland after crashing out in the second test of the day.

Latvala, who had been running third overall, went off the road following a jump 4 kilometres from the start of the 11.38 kilometre-run through Mokkipera 1, SS3.

Latvala hit the front right of his Focus RS WRC07 in the previous corner and then landed in a ditch on the following jump, the initial impact having broken the car's front right steering arm. Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila both escaped uninjured, but they were unable to continue.

"I approached a left-right-left combination of bends and decided to keep the car as straight as I could," Jari explained. "But I hit a rock, which wasn't in my pace notes, with the front right of the car.

"The handling felt strange immediately afterwards and suddenly I was thrown off the road into the ditch where the car half-rolled and hit a small tree. The data shows I was doing 117kph when I went off."

It is not yet known if Latvala will be able to re-start on Saturday under the SupeRally regulations, but whatever, it is a blow for Ford and the youngster's hopes of finishing on the podium on his home event.
