Duval and Sordo out.

Stobart Ford's Francois Duval has retired from the Rally Japan following a crash in SS6.

Although details are currently sketchy, the accident apparently occurred around halfway through the repeat run through the 11.10 kilometre Yuparo stage.

The test was subsequently stopped to allow medical personnel to get to the scene. Duval's co-driver, Patrick Pivato has been taken to hospital, but he is conscious.

Duval had been running second overall, prior to the incident, having moved in front of fellow Ford man Jari-Matti Latvala in the previous test.

Citroen's Dani Sordo meanwhile was also forced out in the same stage, although that was due to a technical problem - possibly turbo. Sordo had been in P5.

More to follow as we get it...

The FIA introduced a new seat for all the WRC teams for Rally Japan that has more support for side impacts. Sounds like this new seat has done it`s job and protected Patrick Pivato from more serious injury. At least the FIA has done something postive lately.
