Sainz crashes out of Dakar lead.

Long-time leader Carlos Sainz is out of the Dakar Rally after crashing his Volkswagen Touareg during the twelfth stage from Fiambala to La Rioja.

The Spaniard had taken six stage wins out of ten to establish a lead of nearly half an hour in the standings but went off into a ravine at the 79km point of the 253km test.

The incident left Sainz's car unable to continue while co-driver Michel Perin was also reported to have suffered an injury to his shoulder.

Both Sainz and Perin have now been taken the bivouac in Fiambala, with Mark Miller moving into the lead of the event as a result.
