Wilson Jr. set to notch up 50th start

Britain's Matthew Wilson will make his 50th start in the FIA World Rally Championship on the Rally Ireland this coming week - and the Englishman is targeting a 'decent result'.

Wilson Jr, who will begin his fourth full season at the top level this year, scored 15 points in 2008, thanks to six-top eight finishes - his best, a strong fifth place on the inaugural Rally Jordan.

Now he will be want to try and replicate that form more regularly and hopefully grab that first podium.

Ireland holds fond memories for Wilson Jr, who will celebrate his 22nd birthday on Thursday, and in addition to scoring two points in 2007, the last and only time the Irish event has had WRC status, he also won the inaugural Rally Ireland back in 2005.

“This is obviously a special event for me having won it in the past and now it's my 50th WRC start so hopefully it will be kind to me,” said Matt.

“The time of year will certainly make the conditions very difficult and in 2007 there was a lot of mud dragged across the road as drivers cut corners over the grass.

“As the first event of the year, it would be good to start off with a decent result and our pre-event test will certainly help with that. It will be a good boost to my confidence to get some miles in the test rather than going straight into the shakedown on Thursday morning.”
