Solberg chasing top five

Henning Solberg has his sights set on trying to bring home solid points from this weekend's Rally Portugal following the disappointment of his early problems last time out in Cyprus.

The Stobart VK M-Sport driver had gone into the mixed-surface event in Cyprus keen to battle for a place on the podium, but an accident on the road section prior to SS1 forced him to retire from day one and then restart under SupeRally rules – putting him well out of contention for a points finish.

Solberg finished eleventh on his last outing in Portugal back in 2007 after picking up a time penalty on the final leg, but he admitted he can't wait for the event to get underway as he seeks to put the Cyprus accident behind him.

“I can't wait to get started in Portugal,” he said. “After the accident in Cyprus it feels like this is the first gravel rally of the year so I'm concentrating on putting in a good performance and hopefully we can challenge for a top-five result.

“I was encouraged by our times in Cyprus, we made some really good progress with some settings and the car felt much better on the last two days. Hopefully we can put these improvements to good use. I remember the roads in Portugal being quite fast and difficult to get exactly right, but I am always up for the challenge.”
