Hirvonen: Latvala just needs to move on…

BP Ford Abu Dhabi's Mikko Hirvonen has told his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala to forget what happened in Poland and just concentrate on doing well in the remaining four events of the season.

Latvala has endured a turbulent year and while there have been some highs, such as his win in Sardinia, there have also been some real lows, including his massive off in Portugal and more recently his error in Poland, when he crashed out in the final test, the short 2.50 kilometre Mikolajki super special and threw away a certain second place.

That proved to be very costly for Ford in its battle with Citroen in the manufacturers', but the 'Blue Oval' remains committed to the youngster, as Ford boss Malcolm Wilson told Crash.net Radio last week [see separate story – click here].

Now Hirvonen has come out and urged his compatriot to look forward and not dwell on something that is in the past.

“Jari-Matti just needs to get around it. That is the only way,” Hirvonen told Crash.net Radio in the countdown to Rally Finland, which is of course his – and Latvala's – home event.

“He has made many mistakes this year. But it has happened already and you can't change that. He just needs to move on and concentrate on the next rallies.”

Asked if Latvala's errors have made things more difficult for him, Hirvonen added that it hasn't really made much difference to him personally. However he did concede that for Ford to win the manufacturers', they need Latvala to deliver and be more consistent.

“It doesn't really make it any harder. I do need to bring points to the team, but then again those points are very important for me as well. When I am concentrating on the drivers' title I need points for that and when I get points for it, it helps the team as well. That is all I am trying to do,” he explained.

“But for sure, my points are not going to be enough for the manufacturers' and so we need Jari-Matti up there,” Hirvonen summed-up.
