Wilson Jr ready to step up in Finland?

Britain's Matthew Wilson should be in a position to step it up and take a good points' finish on the Neste Oil Rally Finland next week, that's the view of his father and Ford boss Malcolm Wilson.

Wilson Jr, who is currently in his fourth full year at the top level in the World Rally Championship, has scored points in all but two of the events this season and with another fifth place pocketed in Poland - his third top-five of the year - the youngster will again be keen to put his Focus in the top-eight.

Furthermore with three years' experience of Rally Finland now under his belt, the Stobart Ford man should definitely be able to improve on his previous best finish of ninth on the Jyväskylä-based event.

Wilson Jr was also encouraged by how everything went on the last round and with how he coped with the ultra fast tests there.

"Doing Rally Poland before Finland was really good preparation for us," Wilson Jr explained. "We picked up a lot of things in Poland, including changes with our pacenotes that will really help in Finland.

"Hopefully we can get a good feeling with the car at the [pre-event] test [on Monday]. It always helps to have some time in the car in Finland before the rally starts as it is such a technical event and the speeds are so high.

"I've been there three times before so I'm in a much better position now as it is a rally where you do need experience."

Malcolm Wilson concurs that the mileage gained by his son on the '1000 Lakes' in 2006, 2007 and 2008 will be critical, especially as it is an event that is dominated by the locals, who grow up on these blisteringly fast roads and who always do well as a result.

"Matthew has gained invaluable experience in this event over the past three years and is now ready to step up and take a good points' finish for the Stobart team.

"He and [co-driver] Scott [Martin] learned a lot from their strong result at Rally Poland and should be able to translate that into another consistent and reliable performance in this challenging event," Wilson Sr concluded.
