Kris Meeke admits that a fifth place in Madeira could prove crucial to his hopes of securing the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title.

The Peugeot UK driver has enjoyed three wins already this season, but was forced to work hard to take fifth - and four championship points - on last weekend's event.

The result ensures he now holds a five point lead over Skoda driver Jan Kopecky in the IRC standings but he admitted it hadn't been an easy event.

"I probably worked harder for those four points than I did for the ten I got in Brazil, Azores and Ypres," he said. "It's such a tough place to go for the first time. It's such a specialised event and it's very difficult to learn the roads.

"In Ypres you had maybe 100 corners per stage to learn but in Madeira it was more like 300."
