Meeke set to defend IRC title

Kris Meeke set to defend the IRC title in 2010 with the Peugeot UK team
Kris Meeke has revealed that he is set to return to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge to defend his title in 2010.

Meeke wrapped up the title in style with victory on Rally Scotland, giving him an impressive score of 66 points from a maximum of 70 this season – although the result of the Scottish event remains provisional as stewards investigate possible irregularities with his Peugeot 207 S2000.

Meeke's win in Scotland came after an event long battle with the Skoda of Guy Wilks, with the new champion eventually securing victory by just over 20 seconds and he dedicated the victory to his mentor, the late Colin McRae on what would have been the Scot's home event.

“It's awesome, absolutely awesome,” Meeke reflected. “I'm going to take my time to savour it because I don't think we'll ever have another year like this; five victories and two second places in seven IRC rallies.

“I have to thank the Kronos team and Peugeot for giving me this opportunity. I'd also like to dedicate this victory to Colin McRae. We've worked long and hard for this and it's an emotional victory.”

Quick to quell talk about his future, Meeke also revealed that he will remain with Peugeot UK again in 2010 in an attempt to reclaim the title.

"There has been a bit of uncertainty over the last few months and everyone's been looking to me but we've finally dotted the i's and crossed the t's and for me it's absolutely impossible to put into words how grateful I am to Peugeot UK and Kronos for the opportunities they have given me this year," he said. "Everyone talks about the other cars getting stronger and the 207 getting older but I know Peugeot Sport have given me the commitment next year to push the car to its maximum and I'm very happy to be staying around with them for next year."
