IRC: Wittmann cans Monte run

Sponsor blow forces Franz Wittmann to withdraw his Rallye Monte Carlo entry.

Franz Wittmann has confirmed today that he has had to abort plans to compete on the Rallye Monte Carlo.

The 27-year-old had been hoping to return to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2011 and was due to compete in January in the opening event of the season in a Peugeot 207 Super 2000. However yesterday he learned that Interwetten, his main sponsor, was pulling the plug on its involvement.

“We had a meeting with the people at Interwetten to sort things out. Unfortunately though, I was told that they plan to set different marketing activities next year for business policy reasons,” Wittmann said.

“I am nevertheless extremely grateful to Interwetten, and especially Wolfgang Fabian, for the support over the last two years. This co-operation enabled me to perform in rallying at the highest level and thereby introduce myself internationally.

“[However] this cancellation [now] creates a budget hole that is too large to be filled without a main sponsor. From this moment on I will naturally try to find some partners who can help me to successfully continue my rally career in some form,” he added.
