Solberg tops shakedown in Sardinia

Petter Solberg sets the pace in shakedown for Rally Italy
Petter Solberg set the pace on shakedown for the latest round of the World Rally Championship season in Italy.

The Norwegian powered his Citroen DS3 WRC through the 2.06km shakedown test in a time of 1min 45.4secs – putting him more than half a second clear of the Ford of Jari-Matti Latvala.

“I'm aiming to win because I need the points,” Solberg said. “I feel much more confident in the car after a good test on medium rough gravel before the rally. I didn't make any big changes, it's just the details but I'm feeling good.”

Mads Ostberg was third quickest ahead of Sebastien Ogier, who goes into the event chasing his third successive victory this weekend, while Henning Solberg and Dani Sordo rounded out the top six – the latter in the first of the Mini John Coooper Works cars debuting in the series this weekend.

“At the moment we don't know how the car will be, but this is the first time for all of us together on a rally and so we just have to wait and see what happens,” he said afterwards.

Mikko Hirvonen, Sebastien Loeb, Federico Villagra and PG Andersson completed the top ten.

Obviously some of the guys were just checking their cars. There is no way that Loeb would be 3.6 seconds down on Petter after just two Kilometres Mikko 7th and Loeb 8th fastest ?? You have to say that this is just tactics and that no one wants to demonstrate their true pace before the Rally gets underway except for the Bold Petter and Jari Matti These are the true drivers who dont care about all that, they are just so hungry to win, these are my favorite drivers, they both wear their emotions on their sleeve and keep the true Rally spirit alive This game is all to obviously becoming very Clandestine and tactical, they will soon call it WRCC, The World Rally Chess Championships
