Your Top 10 World Rally Drivers of the Year 2011: 10: Mikko Hirvonen

Nationality: Finnish Team: Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team Car: Ford Fiesta RS WRC Championship position: 2nd Points: 214 points (average tally per event: 16.46) Events: 13 (out 13) Wins: 2 Podiums: 8 (in total) Points finishes: 12 Stage wins: 37 Power Stage wins: 3

Mikko Hirvonen may have took the championship fight to the wire, just like he did in 2009, but that wasn't enough to impress you and he finishes only tenth in our World Rally Driver of the Year vote, polling an average mark of 6.53 out of 10.

The Finn secured two victories during 2011, coming out top in Sweden and Australia.

He also took second place finishes in Mexico, Sardinia, Argentina and Spain and in the end scored points (and finished in the top-four) in every single event, bar Rally GB, the crucial season decider.

His off in Wales proved very costly however, and ended his - and Ford's - title hopes, although admittedly he was only still in contention after his team-mate, Jari-Matti Latvala, had gifted him places in Australia, France and Spain.

Not a vintage year for the 31-year-old, even by his own admissions and it remains to be seen how he will do in 2012, now that he has left Ford to line-up alongside eight-time WRC champion, Sebastien Loeb at Citroen.
