Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala has crashed out in Portugal going off the road in the first test of the day.

The Finn, who led overnight, slid off and into a ditch near the end of SS5 after hitting a rock. It has yet to be confirmed if he will be able to re-start on Saturday. Latvala was one of a number of runners to get caught out in Tavira 1, with heavy rain, mud and fog making conditions extremely perilous.

Ott Tanak, who was fourth overnight, also went out, as did Theirry Neuville and Haydon Paddon.

Lots of other drivers reported moments too, including new rally leader, Petter Solberg: "I went off in a right-hand corner and lost 10 seconds," he told the official WRC site. "It was so muddy, so slippery - just unbelievable. After that I backed off because it was too risky from championship point of view."

Solberg now leads Mikko Hirvonen by 25.1 seconds, with Mads Ostberg third, 33.7s further back.
