Hirvonen expects open event

Mikko Hirvonen predicts an open event when the WRC arrives in Argentina
Mikko Hirvonen says he expects Rally Argentina to be wide open amongst the front-runners when it comes to the fight for victory.

The Finn goes into the event seeking to bounce back from disappointment in Portugal, where he secured a maiden win for Citroen on the road only to be stripped of his success for technical reasons afterwards.

Hirvonen finished second in Argentina last season for Ford and is now keen to put Portugal behind him and focus on a strong result next weekend.

“We thought that we would see a real pecking order between the various competitors established in Portugal,” he said. “The way the race worked out meant we didn't get that and I think this rally is going to be very open again. In Portugal, we spent the most of the rally driving at a measured pace. The main thing was to stay on the road, as we had a good lead. I can't wait to get back to real racing in Argentina. The rally has some very beautiful stages and I always enjoy competing here.

“It's true that Argentina is a special rally, the atmosphere is incredible and some stages, such as Mina Clavero/Giulio Cesare, are like no other. I had my best ever result here last year, when I finished as runner-up. I hope I can do at least as well this year; in any event, I am determined to be in the mix with the top drivers. The rally will be all the more interesting for the fact this year's format leans even more towards endurance.”
