Latvala to use break to 'get rid of negative thoughts'

27 June 2012

Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala has said he will be looking to come back refreshed after the WRC's summer break.

Latvala's miserable season continued in New Zealand and while he was in contention early on, his hopes ended late on day one when his car hit a hole and spun into a fence in SS7. Although there was no damage, some wire became wrapped around a wheel and the car was unmoveable until the crew used some clippers to cut it free.

The incident relegated Latvala to ninth, costing him over four minutes, and while he fought back to finish seventh, with no chance of a podium, he opted to test revised differential settings on his Fiesta RS WRC over days two and three. He is now hoping to feel the benefit of that when the championship reconvenes for Rally Finland at the start of August.

“It's good that the summer break is here and I can try to relax and come back with a refreshed spirit for the second half of the season. I want to analyse everything that has happened so far this year, get rid of any negative thoughts, and move forward,” he said.

“On Sunday [the final day in NZ] I started to regain my speed and confidence and I was happy to earn bonus points for winning the Power Stage.

“I struggled on Friday [day one] and after my spin I focused on testing. That brought some good ideas for the next round in Finland.

"Looking at the points, I have no chance for the drivers' championship now but the main thing will be to keep fighting for victory on every rally,” concluded the 27-year-old.
