Volkswagen motorsport director Jost Capito has confirmed that the German manufacturer is currently on track for 2013.
VW is currently working on the development of the Polo R WRC, but while there had been speculation the squad could run as many as four or five cars next year, Capito added that the team will start the season with just two.
“There is a plausible scenario to get a third car at the start [in Monte Carlo],” Capito stated in an interview with rallye-magazin.de
. “But only if one has everything under control and if everything works the way we imagine and if we have enough experience in the team.
“When that happens, whether in 2013 or in 2014, will really depend on how the progress is within the whole team.
“Volkswagen is accustomed to success and is ambitious. But in contrast to the established teams from Ford and Citroen, Volkswagen cannot fall back on ten years of experience in the rally circus. The WRC is for our car, our technology and our team completely new territory.
“Currently we are on track, however, and are on plan [with our development]. The car is reliable, and that's the main point. To make a reliable car fast is easier than to make a fast car reliable. We are in all areas where we should be. There are many tests ahead and many things that we will do to be even better. We work towards this. I think that we will have a competitive car in early 2013,” he added.
As for drivers, and who will join Sebastien Ogier in 2013, Capito was tight-lipped, although it is believed Jari-Matti Latvala may have already inked a two-year deal to join VW from Ford next season.
“The first car will be for Sebastien Ogier and [his co-driver] Julien Ingrassia. For the second car we cannot say anything,” Capito continued.
“Kris Nissen [my predecessor] has developed a very good young driver programme [though] and there is already a growing new generation of young talented drivers. An example is Andreas Mikkelsen. He is a great talent. We are currently working with Andreas, Kevin Abbring and Sepp Wiegand.
"But we will not pull up three drivers in parallel, but rather run then one by one,” Capito summed-up.
