Al-Attiyah ready for asphalt bow

Nasser Al-Attiyah prepares for his first asphalt outing in the WRC in Germany
Nasser Al-Attiyah admits that a difficult weekend could lie ahead in Germany as he prepares for his first asphalt event at the wheel of his Citroen DS3 WRC.

Al-Attiyah will be returning to action in the series having missed the events in New Zealand and Finland while preparing for, and competing in, the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Although he taken a best result of fourth so far this season in Portugal, Al-Attiyah admits that a repeat this weekend in unlikely given his lack of experience on asphalt, with his focus being to learn as much as possible during the event.

“Gravel is the surface on which I am most at ease,” he said. “This will be my first ever tarmac rally in a WRC and I still need to do a lot more work to make progress. I have only raced here once before, last year. I'll be mainly looking to get back into the swing of things and listen to the advice from the team, who have a huge amount of experience at this rally.”

The Qatari returns to the WRC paddock as an Olympic medallist having won bronze in the Skeet competition in London and he admitted it had been a dream come true to stand on the podium in his break away from the rallying scene.

“The last few months have been incredible. I prepared very seriously for the Olympic Games and I achieved my dream in winning a bronze medal,” he said. “I then stayed in London to enjoy the Games and soak up the fantastic atmosphere. I am very determined to try and win the gold medal in Rio in four years time!

“But before that, I'm very pleased to return to rallying. I couldn't choose between my two passions. I realise just how lucky I am to be able to compete in both sports.”
