Volkswagen: Ogier, Latvala have done a ‘great job’ so far

Jost Capito: We have already achieved more at the Rally Monte Carlo than we could ever have dreamed of beforehand

Volkswagen Motorsport director Jost Capito has said he is delighted with how the team's debut WRC event has gone thus far.

Following the penultimate day of Rallye Monte Carlo on Friday, Sebastien Ogier is a comfortable second in his VW Polo R WRC and he has already given the squad two stage wins, the first coming in the very first stage on Wednesday, when he was 3.7 seconds up on current rally leader and WRC legend, Sebastien Loeb. In total Ogier has managed eleven top-five times from a possible 13.

Jari-Matti Latvala meanwhile has also gone pretty well in the sister car and he fought his way up to fifth place in the final stage on Friday. He has managed nine top-six times.

Reflecting on the event, as the action shifts to Monaco for the final five stages today [Saturday], Capito added that he has been pleased with how the entire VW team has performed.

“We have already achieved more at the Rally Monte Carlo than we could ever have dreamed of beforehand. Both driver/co-driver pairings have done a great job so far,” he commented.

“Sebastien Ogier backed up the fantastic results of the first two days of the 'Monte' with more top times [on Friday].

“Jari-Matti Latvala also produced some great work. When evaluating his performance, you cannot forget that he has considerably fewer kilometres in the Polo R WRC under his belt than his team-mate.

“Jari-Matti has slotted into the team perfectly, is gradually developing the car to his liking, and is following the strategy perfectly.

“Furthermore, the entire team is giving an experienced and well-organised impression – and on our first rally with a World Rally Car. From a technical point of view, we are also on the right track: the Polo R WRC is quick and reliable. That gives every one of us extra confidence.”
