Sordo pleased with podium

Dani Sordo marks return to Citroen with a podium

Citroen's Dani Sordo has described his third place finish on Rallye Monte Carlo as a 'really good result'.

Sordo has returned to the Citroen fold this season, after being dropped by the French manufacturer at the end of 2010 and replaced by now Volkswagen pilot, Sebastien Ogier. Despite being in the 'third' car though on this event, the Spaniard went well and while he was almost 4 minutes behind event winner, and team-mate, Sebastien Loeb, he had the satisfaction of completely outperforming Mikko Hirvonen, the other driver nominated to score manufacturers' points for the Citroen Total Abu Dhabi WRT.

“Obviously, I am pleased to mark my return to Citroen with a podium finish,” Sordo reflected after his debut event with the DS3 WRC. “In conditions which aren't really natural for me, it really is a good result. There's no doubt that I finished quite a long way behind both Sebs, but we quickly found ourselves in a different race.

“Today [especially in SS14 and SS16] you just had to stay on the road, the conditions were truly awful, totally mad. The second run on the Col du Turini wasn't quite as difficult, you just had to keep to the lines. But I didn't take any risks. I just wanted to make sure I made it to the end. I can't wait for the next rally now...”

Hirvonen meanwhile eventually finished one spot behind Sordo, gaining two places on the final day when Evgeny Novikov and Jari-Matti Latvala both crashed out in SS14. The Finn conceded he had probably been 'lucky' to get P4, although he pointed out that you only score if you finish.

“I was perhaps a little fortunate at the end of the race, but I am really happy with this result,” he stated. “It was such a difficult weekend that I am happy to walk away with these points. You have to finish the rallies before you get the points and we made it all the way to the end.

“Monte Carlo has always been a difficult rally for me and this year it was the most difficult ever. It has been a long weekend, but championship wise, it is not too bad,” he summed-up.
