FIA WRC Academy Champion Elfyn Evans is to head to Australia to compete in the opening round of the national rally championship after inking a deal with the Innate Motorsport team.

The deal has been put together by RSPORT Motorsport, the Australian importer of the exciting Ford Fiesta R2, and will see Evans compete in the National Capital Rally, which will be held in Canberra from 1-3 March.

Evans will compete in the event ahead of starting his 2013 World Rally Championship program, the prize he won for taking the WRC Academy title last year. Evans will be looking for a competitive run in the Fiesta R2 in the notoriously difficult Canberra based event.

"When I was approached to do the event I jumped at it," he said. "I want to be a professional rally driver, so an opportunity to gain international experience like this is very valuable.

"My employer, M-Sport, thought it was a good idea for my development and a break from our winter is an added bonus but I am taking the event seriously as the team is looking for a result for all the work that goes into putting a deal like this together. I have heard the roads are tricky and knowing when to push and when to ease off a bit is important and that I can expect temperatures in the mid-thirties, so it isn't going to be a holiday" Evans said.

Adrian Coppin from Innate Motorsport said he was pleased to have Evans in the team.

"The opportunity to run Elfyn cements our place as a serious part of the Australian rally community," he said. "I met him when I was in the UK last year and had a ride with him. He has the speed to be a serious contender in Canberra."
