Atkinson takes Mexican drive

Chris Atkinson to drive a Citroen DS3 WRC on the third round of the WRC season in Mexico
Chris Atkinson will make a return to the World Rally Championship in Mexico next month after being called up to the Abu Dhabi Citroen Total WRT line-up.

The Australian will compete in the Citroen DS3 WRC that should have driven by Khalid Al Qassimi, with Al Qassimi unable to take part in the event himself.

Atkinson drove a DS3 WRC in Finland last year, with further outings in a Ford Fiesta and a MINI John Cooper Works WRC meaning he appeared for three different teams during 2012.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” he said of the call-up to the Abu Dhabi line-up. “I wasn't expecting it, but there's a limited number of drivers who can be called on to perform at this level.

“Citroen will have seen what I can do, so that will have been a part of it. I haven't had a factory car since I was at Subaru. The support you get in a factory team is nice and I know some of the Citroen engineers, so it won't be like I'm going in cold. We'll be testing in Europe in a couple of weeks and then we'll go straight to Mexico.

“Hopefully there will be a couple more drives this year. I also want to drive at Rally Australia. As yet I haven't sorted out anything but there's still a few months, so things can happen.”
