Kopecky, Breen hail Kubica

Jan Kopecky: Kubica is a legend
Robert Kubica has been widely praised following his stunning debut in the FIA European Rally Championship last weekend.

Kubica won the first eight stages on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles and was leading by more than one minute when he crashed his Citroen DS3 RRC into retirement in the second stage on day two.

Afterwards his key rivals, Jan Kopecky, who went on to win the event, and eventual runner-up Craig Breen both lauded the F1 grand prix winner.

Kopecky, who has been friends with Kubica since 2006, said: “He's a legend in all motorsports and is a very great driver, always working hard and always pushing. It's fantastic to have him here.”

Breen, meanwhile, said: “He's left a massive mark on everyone in Gran Canaria. The buzz this weekend was absolutely incredible and his speed straight out of the box was pretty amazing. It bodes very well for his career but also the next round of the ERC.”

Kubica will be back on ERC duty on SATA Rallye Acores from 25-27 April, although his next rally outing will actually be in Portugal, when he starts his campaign in the World Rally Championship, competing in the new WRC2 category from 11-14 April. Kubica is also due to contest the Fafe Rally Sprint on Saturday April 6 alongside a host of big names from the WRC, including Sebastien Ogier, Mikko Hirvonen, Dani Sordo, Mads Ostberg and Evgeny Novikov.

If it has wheels attached to it then Kubica can maximise it - he seems to be mega in anything! He lapped the DTM Merc within a 10th/sec of Gary Paffett on his debut test. It will be interesting to see how he copes with gravel - very well I suspect. Real shame he crashed out of this one but I'm sure he'll fix that.
