Sordo targets podium slot
8 April 2013
Following his win on the Fafe Rally Sprint, Citroen's Dani Sordo is confident of a podium finish on this weekend's Rally of Portugal.
The Spaniard believes a return to a more 'traditional' event with fast and tight narrow stages, he can put in a performance that will see him claim a return to the podium; something he has done three times previously during his first tenure with Citroen from 2007 to 2010.
“The surface provides a good level of grip and above all else, that's what I like about it”, he said. “I have already managed three podium finishes in Portugal in the C4 WRC, so if I could just climb a step or two on the podium, that would be perfect.”
Sordo also added that he now feels more comfortable with the Citroen DS3 WRC following a new set up direction adopted by him and the team in testing during the five-week break between the Mexico and Portuguese rallies.
“I'm pleased with the work we have done in testing," he said. "The new set-up has made me feel more confident and I can't wait to put that into practice in the rally.”
Despite his optimism and newly discovered confidence with the car, Sordo added that the weather would be a decisive factor in the outcome of the rally and stopped short of making any rally winning predictions.
"If it rains like last year, then the course becomes a bit of an ice rink," he said, "and the outcome of the rally is anyone's guess.”
Teammate Khalid Al Qassimi is also relying on previous knowledge of the Portuguese stages to score his first points of the season, but admitted he would need a mistake free rally to do so.
“Portugal is an event that I know reasonably well,” the Abu Dhabi driver said.
“I am starting to find some rhythm, so I think I can fight for a place in the points. But to do that, I'll need to avoid making any mistakes.”By George East
