Ostberg crashes out in Portugal

Mads Ostberg's early promise ends in disappointment with an off in SS3
Mads Ostberg has crashed out of the lead on Rally de Portugal on the third stage of the event.

The Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team driver reportedly rolled his Fiesta RS WRC car 13 kilometres in. Although the Norwegian and his co-driver, Jonas Andersson escaped unhurt, he was unable to continue.

Ostberg had been second quickest this morning in the opening test, 4 seconds behind Sebastien Ogier. However he seized the initiative in the next test, SS2, setting the pace and moving to the front, 3.9 seconds up on his French rival, before disaster struck in the repeat-run through Mu.

“Mads and Jonas roll on SS3 - too fast into a left-hander,” the team said via its official Twitter feed. “Both are OK, but they will not restart today.”

“This is what happens when you go for 5 in 4 blind corner,” Ostberg wrote on his Facebook page alongside two pictures of his crash damaged Fiesta. “You end up a bit off road!

“Nothing more we can do today, feeling quite low right now...”
