ERC: M-Sport to debut next-gen car in Belgium

12 June 2013

M-Sport are to run their new-generation rally cars when the FIA European Championship visits Belgium at the end of June.

The car conforms to the new R5 regulations and represents the future of regional rally car design. The Ford Fiesta will not compete for times in Ypres, but will run in all 20 stages that make up round six of the championship.

Belgian driver Thierry Neuville will drive the R5 category car, which has been developed by the FIA as a faster, more affordable option to the successful Super 2000 class cars.

Malcolm Wilson OBE, Managing Director of M-Sport is pleased the R5 will be able to run in a strong testing environment and believes the project will be a success.

“By running the car in Ypres we get more real-time testing in a proper environment,” he said.

“But we also want to put on a very strong performance and showcase what the car can do to potential customers on what is a very important rally. The R5 is ideal for the ERC and Ypres is the perfect place to start what we hope will be a very successful project.”

Peugeot have also confirmed their new R5 design's attendance in Ypres, where Briton Kris Meeke will be at the wheel of the T16.
