Volkswagen: We cannot afford to take our foot off the gas!

2 July 2013

Volkswagen Motorsport director Jost Capito has said that while he is happy with what the squad has achieved this season, he has warned that they must remain just as focussed in the second half.

VW has impressed in 2013 and enjoys a significant lead in both the Drivers' and Manufacturers' Championships.

Indeed the Polo R WRC has clocked the fastest time on 69 of the season's 120 special stages - a remarkable success rate of 57.5 per cent.

Furthermore, at least one Volkswagen Motorsport driver has stood on the podium at every round of the WRC this year – predominantly runaway championship leader, Sebastien Ogier, who has won four of the seven WRC rallies to date and has finished runner-up in a further two.

Ogier's chief rival in the Drivers' Championship is team-mate, Jari-Matti Latvala. The Finn, who won in Greece, is 64 points back (and 20 points up on Thierry Neuville in third). VW itself meanwhile has a 48-point cushion over Citroen in the Manufacturers'.

Despite all that, however, Capito is taking nothing for granted...

“We are very happy with the results, as we have far exceeded our original goals. However, we cannot afford to take our foot off the gas and must remain just as focussed in the second half of the season if we want to win the World Championship,” he stated.

“We still have six rallies to overcome – a challenge we are looking forward to facing. Our focus for now is on the Rally Finland, the next event at the start of August. That is followed by the Rally Germany – another highlight, the home race for Volkswagen, and our first real asphalt rally.

“We are already looking forward to the second part of the WRC season and to the sporting challenges that it throws up.”
