Citroen: We will be there with a manufacturer entry

Yves Matton confirms that Citroen will continue to field at least three cars in the WRC next year - and hints that Robert Kubica could get a chance in a full-blown World Rally Car
Citroen Racing boss Yves Matton has confirmed that the French manufacturer will continue to run at least three cars in the World Rally Championship next year.

Citroen will move into the World Touring Car Championship for 2014 with a team featuring Sebastien Loeb and Yvan Muller, but Matton has confirmed that its participation in the WRC will remain unaffected.

While Loeb has taken two WRC wins this season, regular pairing Mikko Hirvonen and Dani Sordo have endured a more challenging campaign and have failed to take victory, leaving Citroen 55 points down on Volkswagen in the title race.

Despite those struggles, Matton insisted that Citroen would continue in the series next year with discussions about drivers ongoing, with a number of names in the mix for the two factory seats alongside Khalid Al-Qassimi.

“We will be there with a manufacturer entry [in 2014],” he told MaxRally. “It means at least two cars and also a car for Khalid Al-Qassimi. For the drivers we are working on it and I hope we will be able to tell something more at the end of this month.

“For the moment it's completely open [in terms of drivers]. I didn't choose my driver philosophy for next year and I don't decide on the results of one rally. I will start this after Germany. The deadline will be when the championship entry closes [in December] but I hope to be faster than that.”

However, while Citroen's options remain open when it comes to its driver pairing, Matton suggested that former F1 racer Robert Kubica could be in line for outings in a full-blown WRC machine on the back of a series of impressive outings this year in WRC.

“He's doing a very good job but I will say I am more impressed on gravel than on asphalt,” he said. “On asphalt everybody expected him to be fast but he's also very fast on gravel even though he's a rookie on gravel compared to asphalt

“He's only done 10 rallies in his life at the moment and each rally is a lot of experience for him. I hope we can do something together next year but for the moment it's a little too early. If he continues like he has been doing then it's normal to put him in a World Rally Car for two or three rallies but I don't say the whole championship.”

Kris Meeke has also been linked with a 2014 drive on the back of his impressive showing in Finland.
