Elfyn Evans will get back behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta R5 on Rallye Deutschland this week as the model makes it WRC asphalt debut.
Evans' previous two events with the WRC2 R5 – the most recent in Finland – have been marred by misfortune and now the Welshman is hoping for a change of luck.
This will be only his second outing in Germany, but the youngster knows how to tame the difficult stages having secured victory as part of the FIA WRC Academy last year and he is hopeful he can show the kind of form that saw him finish sixth on his debut with the Fiesta RS WRC in Sardinia.
“This is going to be another difficult event, but one that I am really looking forward to,” said Evans, who will again run in WRC2 and in Qatar M-Sport colours. “There are three very different days in terms of stages, so the key is being able to adapt quickly.
“You also need to be very clean and tidy and drive within your limits. Although the stages vary quite dramatically, they are all extremely unforgiving with little room for error.”
“This will be the first time we'll see the R5 on asphalt in the WRC,” he added, “but I think it has all the ingredients to be just as competitive as it was on gravel. Again, it's another competitive field, but I really enjoy tarmac rallies."
So what's the target? “We'll just have to see where we are after the first couple of stages and try our best as always,” he concluded.
