Latvala: I want to fight for second in Drivers' Championship

22 October 2013

Volkswagen's Jari-Matti Latvala has set himself the 'personal target' of fighting for second in the 2013 WRC Drivers' Championship ahead of the penultimate round of the season.

Latvala heads into Rally de Espana this week third in the standings with 125 points on the board, leaving him 18 points shy of the on-form Thierry Neuville in second and only 8 points up on Dani Sordo, who is fourth.

With 56 points left up for grabs, however - 25 for an event win and 3 for winning the Power Stage - it is clear the battle for the vice-champions spot behind Sebastien Ogier will probably go to the wire in Wales.

Looking to this weekend's event, Latvala also acknowledged the desire to help ensure Volkswagen clinches the Manufacturers' title.

“Following on from Séb [Ogier] and Julien [Ingrassia] winning the Drivers' and Co-Drivers' Championships in France, our next goal as a team is to clinch the manufacturers' title too at the Rally Spain. I'd be delighted if I could contribute to that with a good result,” Latvala confirmed.

“Aside from that, I've also set myself a personal target this season: I'd like to fight for second place in the Drivers' Championship.

“I'm up against tough competition though: Dani Sordo has performed very well recently – he'll definitely be a force to reckon with at his home event. He's one of the strongest drivers around on asphalt.

“But we'll be competing on gravel during the last day in Spain, which makes the whole thing pretty interesting,” he concluded.
