Citroen has five possible drivers on list for 2014
25 October 2013
Citroen team boss Yves Matton has confirmed the outfit is in talks with five drivers for the 2014 World Rally Championship season.
In addition to current drivers, Mikko Hirvonen and Dani Sordo, Britain's Kris Meeke, former F1 driver, Robert Kubica and Qatar M-Sport WRT man and
columnist, Mads Ostberg are all said to be possibilities.
“Yes, it's Mads Ostberg, Kris Meeke, Dani Sordo, Mikko Hirvonen and Robert Kubica,” Matton confirmed to reporters ahead of this weekend's Rally de Espana, the penultimate round in the 2013 WRC, when asked about the five drivers on his list.
“Part of the strategy is to bring new talent to the World Rally Championship. We want one driver with the new talent and that is why we speak to the drivers who have never won a rally or have not been for a long time in the WRC.”
Quizzed when an announcement will be made, Matton replied: “We hope to have one decided before Rally GB, and the other I won't say when the decision comes.”
As for the objectives next season, Matton is keen for the squad to bounce back after a pretty disappointing 2013.
“The intention is to try to continue to win some rallies. Like I explained, one of the problems for the WRC is that the number of drivers capable of winning the events is too low, that's why we try to bring in a new driver – but also we still want to win.
“For sure, we did not achieve what we want to achieve [this year]. We win some rallies, but at the end, only one title is left. And with only six points needed for Volkswagen to have the title, it will be difficult.
“Maybe that's the reason we change the driver philosophy.”
