Hirvonen: I'd love to end season with a win

8 November 2013

Mikko Hirvonen has said he would love to conclude the 2013 WRC season with a victory on Wales Rally GB next week.

Hirvonen has managed five podiums this season, but has yet to stand on the top step. Indeed since making the decision to switch from Ford to Citroen at the end of 2011 he was won only once – back in Sardinia at the end of last year – and after a pretty lacklustre 2013, he will be out to impress on an event he has taken in ten times to date, including winning in 2007.

“After finishing on the podium five times this season, obviously I'd love to end the season with a win,” confirmed the Finn, who has been linked to a return to M-Sport in recent weeks. “It's a difficult rally, but I like the extremely fast roads. It's exhilarating for drivers, although you have to be careful to keep out of trouble.”

“At this time of year, we may well get the worst of the weather conditions, with fog and rain, and maybe even frost first thing in the morning. That can make braking of any kind pretty tricky, so you have to respect the course,” he added.

Team-mate Dani Sordo meanwhile is also keen to end the season on a high, and while it is not one of his favourite events, he has finished on the podium twice and was third in both 2008 and 2009. This will be his seventh Wales Rally GB.

“Obviously, this isn't my favourite surface. I like gravel, but more so when the grip is consistent. In Wales, we're often faced with a racing line that is covered in mud! But I'm not going to get too worried about it; my goal is just to try and achieve the best possible result,” said the Spaniard.

“I proved once again in Spain that I could deal with slippery conditions," he continued, "and as is the case on all of the gravel rounds, you have to be on the pace from the word go on the qualifying stage in order to be able to choose a good starting position."
