Latvala rues 'small mistakes'

15 November 2013

Jari-Matti Latvala said he had made 'too many little mistakes' after losing ground to team-mate Sebastien Ogier on the second day of Wales Rally GB.

The Finn, winner of the event for the past two seasons, went into Friday's stages sitting in third place but moved up into second spot ahead of Thierry Neuville after topping the times on the first run through Myherin.

By then however, Latvala had already lost almost ten seconds to Volkswagen partner Ogier and then dropped further back on the afternoon loop to head back to service in Deeside just over 20 seconds away from the lead.

“Speedwise it's been okay, but there have been too many little mistakes that have cost me time,” he told Crash.net. “That's a bit annoying for me, and I need to make sure I get rid of them tomorrow.

“Running first on the road today was okay this morning but in the afternoon there were quite a lot of ruts from the cars in the National Event coming through the stages. We understeered a few times and struggled for grip a bit more, but we made it through.”

Latvala will now aim to close on Ogier on Saturday's stages, but he admitted that the lack of a mid-day service halt would have an impact on how he approached the third day of action.

“For sure it will be a challenge,” he said. “We have to think about the tyres but I will try to keep the pressure on. We can't make mistakes and I have to make it to the finish of the day to fight for a better result.

“As for catching Sebastien, I will do my best but it won't be easy as he is really strong at the moment.”
