Wales Rally GB: Evans aims for more WRC outings

Elfyn Evans hopes for more outings in a WRC car in 2014 following a maiden WRC2 win in Wales
Elfyn Evans says he is aiming for more outings in a full-blown WRC car in 2014 after bringing the curtain down on his 2013 World Rally Championship with a maiden victory in WRC2.

Competing in his own backyard over the course of the weekend, the Qatar M-Sport driver took the lead on Thursday evening's night-time stages and wasn't headed as he gradually pulled away from the chasing pack.

The 24-year-old ultimately took class honours by just over a minute ahead of Jari Ketomaa, marking his first WRC2 win after two runner-up finishes in his previous three outings.

“It's a great feeling to win the final round,” he told Crash.net on his return to service following the finish. “I was hungry for a win earlier in the season and it would have been nice to win some of the others against Robert [Kubica], but I have had a lot of support this weekend and to win at home is a special feeling.

“The team has done a fantastic job and the Fiesta R5 has shown how competitive it is this weekend. On the whole, this has been a massive learning year for me, basing myself out of M-Sport and both living and working there. It has brought me on massively as a driver and the experience I've been able to gain has been invaluable. Ending with a win is great.”

Evans, the son of former British champion Gwyndaf, will now turn his focus towards putting together a programme for 2014 and he admitted that he was keen for more outings in a WRC car having made his debut in the Fiesta RS WRC in Italy earlier in the year.

“I'd like to have more outings in the WRC car, but the priority for me has to be a programme that will allow me to gain more experience of all of the events to start with,” he said. “After that, we will see if we can put together a deal that will allow me to do some of those events in a WRC car, which I think it what would be ideal for me.

“We are always working on the budget side of things and I would love to be able to stay with M-Sport next year to build on the progress I have made this year. It would be the perfect place for me to be.”
