Wales Rally GB: Higgins shines on WRC return

Mark Higgins: Hopefully it won't be another five years until I'm back out again [in the WRC]!
Mark Higgins impressed on his return to the WRC last weekend on Wales Rally GB taking third in the WRC2 class and tenth overall on the 2013 World Rally Championship season finale.

Higgins, who was last out in the WRC in 2008 and who has been competing this year in China in a Subaru Impreza STi R4, ran competitively in his Symtech Racing Ford Fiesta R5 throughout the four-day event.

Indeed he held a place in the top-three in WRC2 from SS2 onwards and looked well on course for second in class behind fellow Brit Elfyn Evans, until mechanical woes - a misfire - cost him time on day three.

Nevertheless though, Higgins was still pleased with his weekend and rightly so given he set 19 top-five WRC2 stage times from a possible 22 – including winning the second run through the short 2.06 km Chirk Castle super special.

“I just really enjoyed it,” said the 42-year-old and three-time British Rally Champion at the finish after his very first R5 outing. "Everything about it has been great - the atmosphere, the new venues and the stages have all been amazing. We had a few niggles at the start, but a class podium is pretty good.”

“I'd love to come back next year,” he continued, “we'll see what we can do. I've got another 10-15 years yet, there is definitely more to come!”

Writing on his official Facebook page, he added: “Firstly a massive thanks to all our sponsors and DMACK Tyres who had a fantastic tyre for the rally, and the MSL team and all the lads who made this happen and the support we have had all over the event.

“After losing time yesterday there was no point risking anything so we decided to consolidate our position [today] and bring the car home in one piece.

“The stages, the event, the weather, and the new venue has made the whole experience very special and hopefully it won't be another five years until I'm back out again! I'm off to China in the morning and Carl [Williamson – my co-driver] is off to Kenya...

“Big thanks again to everybody.”
